Three Paths to Animation Success

Do successful animators follow similar paths as they move from student to success? We checked in with three animators at the top of their game. Two are rising stars within major studios – Ben Willis at DreamWorks Animation and Animation Mentor graduate Travis Tohill at the visual effects house Industrial Light & Magic (ILM). The third animator, Nicky Phelan, received an Oscar nomination this year for his short film Granny O'Grimm's Sleeping Beauty, created and produced at Brown Bag Films, a small studio in Ireland specializing in animated television series and commercials.

Animation Mentor:
What inspired you to learn character animation?

Steve Cady:
I fell into animation purely by accident. Having just registered for the illustration program at Sheridan College, I was touring the campus when I overheard some student talking about the animation program. Big studios like ILM and Disney would come to the school to recruit students. I was so excited about this that I quickly changed my course of study. But having said this, growing up I always had a passion for movies. It was a lifelong dream to work in the film industry, but not knowing how to attain this, I was thrilled to hear that Sheridan College could offer me the opportunity.

Transitioning from Student to Professional
TIPS & TRICKS WITH Joshua Beveridge

Joshua Beveridge of Sony Pictures Imageworks talks about the contrast between animating in an educational environment and animating in the studio. One major shift is obvious-the workload gets heavier, and attention to detail becomes essential. Joshua explains that, although the majority of the population will never notice all the painstaking details that went into certain scenes, it is worth the extra work when the characters portrayed on screen are believable and seamless.
