In animation, as is true of life, quantity is not the same as quality and feature-length animation is not necessarily loftier than the shorter works. Pixar Animation is regarded as a giant of the CG cinema world, near-unanimously celebrated for their gorgeous, technically stunning movies with truly endearing characters and heart-warming narratives. Their epic films of super heroes and fast cars however, are but the end result of smaller projects.

More than 70 Animation Mentor alumni came out to the second Animation Mentor Job Fair held on Friday, Jan. 16, at Animation Mentor headquarters in Emeryville, CA. We had a robust attendance from several studios as well.

Animation Mentor graduated its fifth class on Saturday, Jan. 17 at the Cowell Theater in Fort Mason in San Francisco, CA. There were 123 graduates in the class, and 65 graduates from 11 different countries attended the graduation.

What inspired you to become an animator?

Jason Martinsen:
My dad is a graphic designer and illustrator and encouraged my interest in art growing up. So I've had a fondness for art as long as I can remember. Both my parents read to us a lot and we didn't have a TV so I think that nurtured our creativity at a young age as well, forcing us to use our imaginations.
