Animation Mentor and Sony Pictures Digital Productions professional education program (IPAX) have put a new twist on old traditions with a state-of-the-art online mentor program. Sony IPAX recently offered an innovative online mentorship program utilizing Animation Mentor's unique online training technology. The three-month long mentorship program paired Sony Pictures Imageworks and Sony Pictures Animation professionals with student apprentices selected from the 18 current IPAX member schools for individualized online mentoring, training and guidance.

What inspired you to become an animator?

Shaun Freeman:
I've always been keen on animation, but the idea of working as a professional animator didn't occur to me until I watched a short film by Jeff Lew called Killer Bean in 2000. The same evening, I also found Victor Navone's Alien Song. After watching them both and finding out that they had both been done by self-taught animators, I decided that I wanted to do the same thing, so every evening for the next three years I obsessively taught myself to animate. I researched online, I practiced and didn't get much sleep.

The Choice to Study at Animation Mentor

I wanted to learn about animation only – a lot of the programs I did including my Bachelors and Masters didn't teach me much about animation, but rather the software I was using. I wanted to focus only on animation, to improve my skills and surround myself with talented people.

You know, this is really a great question, and because it's an uncomfortable (and sometimes unfortunate) topic, I think it's probably avoided far too much. New animators just breaking into the industry are probably blindsided (as I was) by just how deep the politics of a studio can go, or even that they exist at all, so thanks for the great question!
