If I hadn’t seen it, I wouldn’t have believed it myself. The cynics were proven dead wrong. I’m speaking, of course, of the independent creator. This year more than any other we have seen a plethora of little guys and gals who have pushed forward and bypassed the big-name-studio system.

Like you, we’ve been hearing the scary news about the economic downturn and how it’s impacting financial markets and companies across the globe.

Some of you have asked us how this is affecting the animation industry and wondered whether there will be any jobs available in the future. While not everything is recession proof and we can’t predict the future, we want to let you know that we are optimistic about the animation industry. What is life without films, games and television? For many of us, these are the staples of our daily existence!

Animation Mentor:
What inspired you to become an animator?

Jalil Sadool:
I remember making my first comic at the age of seven and asking my mom how to translate the word “kill” from French to English. Now that I think about it, that comic was pretty violent for a seven year old. I was probably influenced by the huge amount of Japanese TV shows that were extremely popular during those days. I’ve always loved drawing but never knew that animation was even a possibility.

Can you become the best at your studio or school?  Sure, I guess, but not for long.  Sooner or later (usually sooner), someone is going to come along and blow you out of the water.  But that's a GOOD thing!  If you're in that situation, I sure hope you'd use it as an opportunity to refocus and learn what you can from your new peer in order to push your game to a whole new level.
