The Choice to Study at Animation Mentor

I wanted to learn about animation only – a lot of the programs I did including my Bachelors and Masters didn't teach me much about animation, but rather the software I was using. I wanted to focus only on animation, to improve my skills and surround myself with talented people.

What I Learned While at Animation Mentor

I learned to be open to criticism and take it in a way that will improve my work. The course has taught me a lot about animation, how to plan my work and how to really think about what I'm going to convey in my work.

Why the Experience Was Unique

Firstly, the whole web-based educational system has been a unique experience; I don't think there is a course out there at this level. Studying from home and working at my own pace was something I had never done before and really enjoyed. I felt comfortable meeting fellow classmates in my 'classroom' (during the Question & Answer sessions with our mentors) and then meeting them at graduation and at the BBQ too!!

Class Preparation While in School

I reviewed my mentor's comments on my work and if there was something I didn't quite understand, I made notes and asked questions. I also asked general questions on how the mentors went about their workflow and if they had any methods that could've been useful for us, like some tips and tricks!!

My Challenges While in School

Working and doing the course at the same time was tough. However, this taught me about good time management and organizing my tasks to make every day during the week count. There were a lot of late nights and plenty of coffee!! And no sleep!!!

My Animation Influences

There are a few animators who have inspired me over the years and I feel that all of them have had an influence to some degree. Of course the Nine Old Men – The Jungle Book is one of my favorite Disney features of all time. The weight in those characters was just so amazing to see, especially on Shere Khan the tiger. Also, my close friend Ricky Wood with whom I worked back home in the UK, continues to be an inspiration for me too. He is a friend and a mentor and he always had time for me no matter how busy he was. A great inspiration!

My Best Animation Moment

When I was in Class 2, The Psychology of Body Mechanics, I felt that even the term body mechanics changed the way I thought about animation. I learned a lot in the space of three months and feel most proud of the work I produced during that term, thanks to my mentor Steve Cady, who was amazing.

Working as a Character Animator

Prior to Animation Mentor, I was already working in the industry in film and games. I started Animation Mentor in January 2007 in the UK (which is where I am from) and got an offer from High Moon Studios., which is based in San Diego, around August 2007. I started work as a character animator in the U.S. in October 2007 and carried on doing Animation Mentor straight through. I really enjoy working there, and the team I work with is a great bunch of talented people who are always great to be around! Now I am working at Trion World Networks, Inc.

My Current Project

An MMO (massively multiplayer online) game currently unannounced.
