This month, Animation Mentor alumnus Chang-Pei Wu breaks down her showcase shot. She explains that she wanted to bring to life a scene involving a parent talking to a child.
Because her shot focuses on the child, Wu needed to create child-like reference to use as a guide. She explains that kids often wear their emotions on their faces and have big, straightforward facial expressions. She used this observation when animating her character.
When animating her character, Wu learned how to keep the character alive even when she was not actively moving or speaking. She even received special mentorship from Bobby Beck, who contacted her personally and offered additional advice on her animation. Wu describes this moment as not only a highlight of her time as an Animation Mentor student — but also a life-changing experience that she will cherish.
