Animation Mentor:
What inspired you to learn animation?

Ziv Ariely:
I have loved animation ever since I can remember.  I have always been amazed by the way that someone can take a spiritless object such as a CG dummy or a drawing on a piece of paper, and give it a life and a personality.  When I was a teenager, I went to see the movie Toy Story, and I was hooked! I had never seen a CG animated film before, and it left a deep impression on me.  I was inspired.  As the CG film industry keeps evolving, so does my enthusiasm. It just keeps getting bigger and bigger.

Animation Mentor:
How has your experience at Animation Mentor been so far?

Ziv Ariely:
So far, my experience at Animation Mentor has been wonderful!  From the first moment that I joined Animation Mentor, everyone was super energized, extremely nice and enthusiastic about animation, and very helpful - it feels like a big family of people that experience animation as I do. It is so great!

Animation Mentor:
What's one of the most important and/or interesting lessons you've learned while at Animation Mentor?

Ziv Ariely:
I must note that I am quite new at Animation Mentor, so I'm sure I have many important lessons before me. Anyway, one of the most interesting and important lessons I have had to this point, is how to observe everything around me, and to “put it in my memory drawer for future use.”  When I walk behind some extroverted person and I see how he moves, or when I see an old woman across the street walking slowly with a cane, I look at them differently now – it is really fun and amazing to realize how many things I have overlooked, although they were always there!

Animation Mentor:
What would be your ultimate dream job?

Ziv Ariely:
My dream work is to be an animator (what else??!!) in a big animation studio such as PDI, ILM. Disney etc, but I have always wanted to work at Pixar. I feel that they have something different in their movies that makes their characters come to life – sometimes even more than some real living people I know!

Animation Mentor:
Who is your favorite animator?

Ziv Ariely:
This is a hard question, since I don't really have a favorite animator.  Many animators did great jobs on numerous characters in movies that I have seen. However I do love the work of Aharon Hartline, and especially his work on Scrat (from the movie Ice Age) - including the fine details of his expressions and movements – this guy is a genius!

Animation Mentor:
What is your favorite animated/CG scene of all time?

Ziv Ariely:
Wow! This question is even harder than the last one! I have many favorite scenes, and here are three of them:

Monsters Inc –the part when Sully thinks Boo has been smashed into a cube of garbage.

Monsters Inc – the ending scene, when Sully is entering Boo’s room at the end of the movie (when she screams “kitty!”) – It made me shed a tear! No kidding! He’s “ALIVE!”

Beauty and the Beast – the part when the beast tries to convince the beauty to come down for dinner, and he says to his servants, “But she is being so difficult!!” with a restrained anger, struggling not to roar – it’s an amazing piece.

Animation Mentor:
Anything else you want to say to your fellow and prospective students of Animation Mentor?

Ziv Ariely:
I highly recommend to my fellow students to keep on watching demo reels, and references – I know it sounds obvious, but I truly believe it is important.
One of the sites that I found very interesting is: http://www.strutyourreel.com/forum/
There you will find so many good animators that have done some amazing work. I truly recommend for you to check it out.
