Geek Fact
Did you know that the two old men near the end of "The Incredibles" talking about it being "old school" are voiced by Frank Thomas and Ollie Johnston. Frank and Ollie were two of Walt Disney's "Nine Old Men", Walt's team of nine supervising animators from the "classic" era of animation. Frank and Ollie also appeared in and provided the voices for the train engineers in "The Iron Giant" which was also directed by Brad Bird. Finally, did you know that animator, Mike Venturini was the one who created the caricatures and animated Frank and Ollie in "The Incredibles" and "The Iron Giant".

Book Showcase: The Art of Silver
By: Stephen Silver
My name is Stephen Silver I am 33 years old and have always loved to draw. My background was drawing caricatures in theme parks and really had no plans of ever getting into animation. One day back in 1997 I dropped of my portfolio at Warner Bros Animation just to see what happened and before I knew it I was hired. I have been designing characters ever since. Clerks the Animated series, Kim Possible and Danny Phantom to name a few. I live in Los Angeles with my wife and two children.

AnimationMentor.com: What made you write (or make) the book?

I decided to publish my own book "The Art of Silver" because there was quite a bit of interest from e-mails I was receiving. People wanted to see more of my sketches. Also everyone I showed my sketchbook to wanted to get copies. So I realized the best thing to do was to put out my own book, the way I wanted.

AnimationMentor.com: What were your intensions?

My intention for this book was to share with other artists my personal drawings and the process I go through. I always found that the most inspirational books to me where the ones that showed sketches, the actual thought process, instead of just looking at fancy finished work. I have always loved sharing tips and techniques with other artists because I was grateful if someone shared theirs with me, after all, that is how we grow as artists. This book was definitely put together for the aspiring artist. It just so happened that a lot of professionals bought it to which was extremely flattering. I had found that a lot of art books had too much writing in them and that the pictures themselves became secondary and small. I felt it was important to really show the art and give helpful tips here and there. You can see more of my daily sketches at stephensilver.blogspot.com
